Appointment of Nigeria's 14th Inspector General of Police

Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo
Inspector General of Police (2009 -)

Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of Administration, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo, was on Friday, July 24, 2009, appointed the 14th Indigenous Inspector General of Police (IG) of Nigeria, by President Umaru Yar’ Adua –ending months of speculation about whom the President would appoint as the IG of Police. Thus with this appointment, IG Onovo becomes the first southeastern IG in the history of the Nigerian Police.

We know that in his distinguished career as a disciplined officer, his philosophy would be succinctly described and codenamed as “
SEMINAR,” explained as follows:

S: Setting the agenda and having all strategic, security and police work and tactics appropriately planned in advance;

E: Engaging and helping all police officers (officers, rank and file and others) to actively participate in police work in order to protect the lives and properties of all Nigerians;

M: Making connection with each Police Unit in the country and providing consistent strategic and tactical security experience and skills through the use of sophisticated weaponry that would deter crimes in Nigeria;

I: Including the administration of the Police, the lower and mid-level police officers, and others –and even the new recruits in the Police Force, providing them with all the relevant training that they need in order to move Nigeria forward as a country where foreign investors would be willing, ready and comfortable to live and invest; and empowering the Police to build on the contributions of their fellow police men and women regardless of their ranks, including the contributions of the Nigerian citizens;

N: Never be afraid to be innovative and be creative –especially in trying new things and in sharing with (and learning from) colleagues –especially in the Advanced World about their best practices and incorporating them into the Nigerian experience;

A: Adapting to the security needs of all Nigerian (rich and poor); investing in "community policing" and respecting the rights that the Nigerian constitution has bestowed on all Nigeria regardless of tribe, gender, class, or creed;

R: Reflecting, analyzing, reviewing and revising all technical-tactical and strategic experiences of all the police units in the country; and in the end, weeding out any and all corrupt practices, and corrupt police officers that every now and then, do tent the integrity of the Nigerian Police Force.

Finally, the leadership and people of Ohanaeze Ndigbo do wish to thank President Yar’ Adua for this unique appointment and confidence bestowed on our illustrious son, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo as the 14th Inspector General of the Nigerian Police. We wish Inspector General Ogbonnaya Onovo a successful tenure of office. Please discharge your responsibilities dutifully, conscientiously, without fear or favor, for "One with God is always, the majority."
